Two-time Sudden Cardiac Arrest Survivor

On February 14, 2017 I suffered a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) on an elevator.  Citizen first responders were able to perform CPR, obtain a publicly accessible automated external defibrillator (AED), and deliver one shock to restart my heart before EMS arrived. EMS delivered 4 additional shocks before I was transported to the hospital 50 minutes later.  After 2 days in ICU and two additional days in recovery I was released four days later neurologically intact.  After my recovery I was able to do all of the things that I could do before my sudden cardiac arrest including my job as a geoscience technician as well as trombone performance, composition and producing.

On May 28, 2021 I suffered another sudden cardiac arrest at a grocery store just outside of Yosemite National Park in California.  Once again a citizen first responder (this time my wife Nancy) was able to perform CPR before EMS arrived who delivered shocks to restart my heart. I was then transported to Sonora, CA then flown by helicopter to Modesto, CA. where I also made a full recovery.

Only one in ten people survive a sudden cardiac arrest.  I survived two SCA's because in both cases I was the recipient of near perfect chains of survival, i.e. calling 911, CPR, early defibrillation, EMS and advanced after care.  These life changing experiences have awakened in me an extraordinary awareness of life, death and everything in between.  With sudden cardiac arrest being a leading cause of death in the United States, our mission at Heartbeat NOLA is to raise awareness about sudden cardiac arrest, the importance of learning CPR and raise funds to place publicly accessible defibrillators in and around the Greater New Orleans area with the goal of making the city a heart-safe community.

Every day is a gift.  Make it count.
